Junior Homeroom Letter 1/21/09

Dear Juniors:

We hope that all of you are thinking about your Graduation Projects and getting excited about the process. Most of you have met with your advisors, and you should continue to do so this semester (at least once per quarter).  Remember, your advisor can help you refine your research topic, suggest a mentor, or refer you to us for further assistance. If you have not yet met with your advisor, Mr. Key will contact you shortly.

We continue to update the website and hope that you will check it often. It is accessible via the Riverside homepage, or you can go directly to http://www.riverside.dpsnc.net/teacherpages/apine/.

If you have any questions, please come by the Media Center and someone will be able to help you. You can also email the Graduation Project Coordinator, Ms. Pine, at amy.pine@dpsnc.net.

Please see important information and instructions below.

We wish you luck in this process,

RHS Graduation Project Committee

If you were enrolled in English III fall semester:

Many of you submitted proposals, and we were excited to read about all of your wonderful ideas for projects. If you still need to submit (or resubmit) your proposal, be certain to do that ASAP. Failure to meet all components of the Graduation Project may jeopardize your graduation in 2010. Your progress regarding the Graduation Project will be recorded on your transcript and will accompany your report card. If you handed in a late proposal or resubmitted your proposal, you will receive it, with feedback, within the first two weeks of this semester.

If your proposal has been approved, congratulations! You can now begin to work on your product and/or preliminary research. If you need help getting started, see your advisor, and/or stop by the Media Center and talk with Ms. Pine, Mrs. Harrison, or Dr. Mayo – we are happy to assist you!

Now is also a good time to secure a mentor. Please remember that each mentor must complete a Volunteer Application (available online, in the Media Center, or in the Guidance Office), and he/she must also fill out a mentor consent form. This green mentor consent form (given to you in English III class, also available online) is the only record the school will have for your mentor selection. This document also goes in your portfolio. When you turn it in, we will make a copy and return the original to you.

If you are currently enrolled in English III:

You are about to begin the Graduation Project process. Ms. Pine will visit your English III class in February, and you will be able to get started soon after that. Start thinking about a topic and a product now! Ask your classmates what they are doing.

Are you interested in getting a head start on your project?

We are seeking students who would like to participate in a pilot study working with CISCO.

You must have a topic in mind. If you are selected to participate in this pilot, you will begin to

work with a mentor in the spring and into the summer.

Contact Ms. Pine (amy.pine@dpsnc.net) by February 6th, 2009 if you are interested.
