 Dear Parents and Guardians,

The State Board of Education voted to delay the N.C. Graduation Project requirement for rising seniors. This action means that current juniors will not have to complete the Project in order to graduate.  Current sophomores and freshmen will be required to complete the four components of the Project.  The Graduation Project will become a high school graduation requirement for the first time with students who first entered ninth grade in 2007-08 (Class of 2010-11).

Riverside High School applauds the work of our juniors as they began their projects and hope it was a good learning experience for them.  Our faculty members will work with the sophomores and freshmen to be sure that they are on task to complete the project before graduation.

“The Graduation Project is North Carolina’s most real-world assessment. It reflects the demands of the 21st century more completely than any standardized test,” said State Board of Education Chairman and CEO Bill Harrison. The North Carolina Graduation Project is designed to make sure that all students who graduate from high school in North Carolina are able to:

· address a topic of interest to them;

· create a product related to the topic;

· complete a research paper about the topic; and

· present their work to a panel of community members.

Please contact Amy Pine (information below) for any further questions regarding the state’s decision to extend the Graduation Project timeline and how that impacts students at Riverside High School.

Sincerely,

James F. Key, II
